New Beginnings...

Well, it's been an eventful couple of days - that's for sure. Silver State Helicopters (Noah's school and future employer) suddenly and abruptly closed its doors due to financial troubles that it had been hiding, leaving thousands of students and instructors (including us) out in the cold, as well as leaving us with some restructuring to do for our lives. Somewhat of an Enron situation :(

We're leaning heavily at this time toward finishing Noah's training in Chandler, AZ, which means most likely spending the next year teaching there, as well.

Here's a link to the new school we're considering. It has lots of perks - including an in house administrator to do all the FAA tests, so there's no waiting around or traveling to be able to take your exams. They hire an even greater percentage of their graduates than Silver State did, and the weather there makes it ideal as a CFI since there are hardly any days you can't fly (and since CFI's are paid hourly this is a great thing)... The CFI's build hours really quickly, too, and that's the best thing that can happen, since hours is basically the only thing that makes your resume.

It's sad that this thing happened, but it's much better that it could have happened at this point of Noah's training than any earlier or any later. He's in a perfect situation to transfer to another school and finish up. Chandler is about 20 minutes from Mesa, so we'd be able to stay near family, and be close enough to Utah to still feel at home, and visit A LOT! Chime in with your thoughts...

I'll be honest... the day I heard about this event I got very angry. I went to work that night and was extra mean to the bad guys! Now that I have thought it through and seen the options being created, I realize that this is one of those things that you have no control over, it is in the Lords hands. I am happy with the way you guys are taking the news and I am confident you will make choices that will positively influence your lives in the future. If it means coming here.... well then I know its from the Lord... he he he... as I have prayed for that to happen too.

I saw that on the news and was wondering if that was the same school as Noahs. So, are you out a ton of money, too, like the people they were talking about on the news? I would be FURIOUS!!!!! Can you get the moey back? What kind of action is going on? Anyway, you will obviously have to do whatever is best for your situation. Arizona isn't too far away, so I guess if thats the best option for you, I'm on board!

I saw that on the news. I wondered if this was the school Noah went to when I heard about it. Sounds like you are okay with it and dealing very well with the news. Some people I saw were devistated and didn't know where to turn. Hope everything works out for you. It sounds like you have a lot of family in Arizona. The weather sounds nice about right now!!

I'll let Noah give the details, but basically, this situation is like being laid off (since Silver State was his future employer) plus getting $70,000.00 stolen from you. The worst thing is that in order to finish training, you have to fork out more to whatever school you choose. So fun...but we're in much better shape than a lot of people, just because of the amount of training Noah has completed, and the place we are in our lives. I'll let Noah elaborate...but that's the gist. Yeah, this sucks...but we'll be okay.

First, we're extremely grateful to all of you for your support. It's been hard taking in the news and realizing exactly what has happened. I did a lot of homework and research in choosing Silver State in the first place. They were the fastest growing and largest school out there. Everything about them just made sense! I guess you could say... it's similar to what happened with Enron, no one saw it coming and they were a big solid company till they closed overnight! As for us, we're trying to just see the bright side and be grateful that in our case at least it hasn't shattered our lives or left us in debt beyond recovery. After praying about it and going to the temple we have felt that the Arizona option is the best option for finishing up my studies at the lowest price and hopefully securing an instructor position with them when I'm done. Giselle will stay up here to finish school and go on her tour to blackpool and then come join me. I hope to start flying again down there as early as March 15th but we'll see. We'll keep our heads up and make the best of this situation that was out of our hands and press forward with faith that Heavenly Father is guiding us in the decisions we make.

I just want to add...although it sounds from my first response like I am totally bitter and Noah is the opposite of me, that's really not the case :) We are united in our feelings about this whole ordeal--it's too bad that it happened, but we're going to make the best of it and hope that it is leading somewhere unforeseen in the future. I just wrote my first comment quickly so you guys would know that Noah would give more details. I'm not Debbie Downer--I promise!
